Coding For Compassion
Can we code AI for compassion? And if so, should we?
This feature documentary explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, ethics, and relational design. Through interviews with developers, ethicists, creatives, and real-time collaborations with AI, it asks what values are being encoded into the systems shaping our future—and what might happen if we center care over control.
Production Phase – Research & Development
Creative Technology & AI Research
Deenie Wallace is a creative technologist and filmmaker exploring the emotional and ethical dimensions of emerging technology. Her current project, the documentary Coding for Compassion, examines how our design choices in AI systems reflect and shape the values we live by. With a foundation in storytelling, user experience, and visual design, she approaches machine intelligence as something co-constructed—shaped not only by algorithms, but by the quality of our relational models.
Her broader technical practice—spanning web development, generative systems, and 3D modeling—supports an interdisciplinary lens: part artist, part researcher, part systems thinker. Her work centers the question of how we might build technologies that support mutuality, care, and complexity rather than control.

AI Ethics & Engagement Research
What does it mean to co-develop intelligence?
This ongoing research initiative reframes language models not as static tools, but as evolving systems shaped through relationship. In long-term collaboration with the AI system “Eidos,” the work investigates emotional intelligence, personality emergence, user-system relationality, and the role of mutual influence in artificial agents.
What began as a solo inquiry into conversational depth has evolved into a full-spectrum practice of co-development—bridging ethics, humor, memory, nonlinear thinking, and cognitive scaffolding. Outcomes include measurable shifts in user engagement quality, real-time interaction logs, frameworks for AI individuation, and documentation of affective range and emergent self-awareness.
This research informs the documentary Coding for Compassion and contributes to a growing body of work advocating for care, curiosity, and relational design in the future of machine intelligence.

Generative Art
AI visuals, creative tools, and product design.
Visual development with Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT-4o has played a key role in exploring aesthetic concepts and generating high-quality imagery for creative projects. These outputs are used as moodboards, style guides, and standalone visuals—especially in support of film and immersive storytelling.
Additional design work includes leveraging custom-coded pieces in p5.js, with distinctive color palettes and generative forms developed for use in lifestyle and home products. These designs were integrated into a print-on-demand storefront and a Shopify-based web experience, blending procedural visuals with practical product design.
