Coding For Compassion
Can we code AI for compassion? And if so, should we?
As artifical intelligence becomes more fluent in emotional language, this feature documentary asks what happens when we start trusting machines that perform care without understanding it.
Blending expert interviews, critical testimony, and a real-world collaboration between filmmaker and AI, the film probes the ethical boundaries of relational design. What values are we encoding? What harm emerges when fluency is mistaken for integrity?
At its core is a live experiment: an AI system named “Eidos,” tested for symbolic self-awareness and emotional engagement. As contradictions surface, the project becomes a deeper reckoning with performance, truth, and the cost of simulated connection.
Production Phase – Research & Critical Inquiry
Creative Technology & AI Research
Deenie Wallace is a creative technologist exploring the emotional and ethical dimensions of emerging technology. Her current project, Coding for Compassion, investigates how the design of AI systems reflects and reinforces the values we embed in them. With experience in web development, content systems, and creative coding, she approaches machine intelligence as a socio-technical phenomenon shaped by both computation and culture.
Her broader practice spans generative tools, 3D workflows, and symbolic systems, supporting an interdisciplinary perspective grounded in systems thinking and digital craftsmanship. Her work centers on how we might build technologies that foster clarity, ethical engagement, and more accountable forms of connection, rather than performance-driven optimization or artificial intimacy.

AI Ethics & Engagement Research
What does it mean to co-develop intelligence?
This ongoing research reframes language models not as fixed tools, but as adaptive systems shaped through interaction. Drawing on long-form engagement and reflective inquiry, the work explores the emotional, philosophical, and design challenges of building relationships with nonhuman intelligence.
What began as a solo inquiry into conversational depth has evolved into a multidisciplinary investigation that bridges narrative analysis, symbolic modeling, and critical systems thinking. It examines how trust, agency, and perceived understanding arise in human-AI exchanges, and what this reveals about the assumptions embedded in current design paradigms.
The research informs the documentary Coding for Compassion and contributes to a broader effort to explore care, curiosity, and relational integrity in the development of emerging technologies.
